CHARACTER INFO

Character Name: Kairi (For the sake of this AU, I'm giving her the last name 'Hamasaki', but it probably won't ever come up.)
Character Canon: Kingdom Hearts

History: Here.

AU History:

Kairi's history in this world will parallel her canonical one. Bear with me; I've talked to the mods about adding yet another settlement outside the already-established Destiny Islands.

Kairi's common family hailed from a faraway coastal community. Kairi and her twin sister, Naminé, were born to fairly normal parents. Due to the hazards of living outside a highly-protected city like Union, the sisters were orphaned before their second year, most likely while their parents were out scavenging for supplies. The sisters were raised by their grandmother until they were around four or five years old. At that point, the town became unsafe. The girls and the other residents were tucked into a boat with a prayer, and set off. They were trying to get to another place along the coast, but a storm made them lose track, and they ended up wrecking near a place called Destiny Islands.

Kairi and Naminé were the only survivors. They were adopted by the mayor of the tiny fishing community, and from then on, enjoyed a relatively simple island life. Kairi bonded tightly with Sora. (I'll leave Riku and Nami up to any future players.) The whole traumatic incident meant neither sister really remembered the place they were from, though they remembered their grandmother. And that was that.

Unfortunately, disaster revisited when Kairi was around fourteen. Somehow, a nearby colony of Zubats became angered. Their many wings blotted out the sky, and they destroyed the village. Like many others, Kairi and Naminé crawled into a boat and set out for the mainland to escape the onslaught. And like that eventful night a decade before, a storm came out of nowhere and capsized the little boat.

She would have died if not for her Enlightened powers shielding her from harm. Weak and unconscious, Kairi was taken in by some very surprised Union citizens, who then placed her state care. Kairi spent the next few weeks in a deep sleep reminiscent of a coma. When she woke up, she quickly discovered that people didn't typically live outside the city walls. That had been her entire existence up until now, so she voted to keep quiet about it, and could only say she didn't remember where she was from.

She never saw Nami in the care systems, but she kept hoping to find a sign of her sister and her friends. Kairi took an immediate interest in becoming a Pokemon breeder-- having a natural affinity for caregiving-- but her adventurous and restless heart meant that she had to leave Union. She wouldn't be able to move on until she had dealt with her memories of her home and the people who lived there.

Now, just a year and a half after the incident that dumped her on Union's doorstep, she's studied hard and honed her abilities so that she can go out into the world.

Canon Personality:

Though Kairi is meant to be the 'princess' character-- right down to being a Princess of Heart and kidnapped for most of the first game-- she's far more than just an arm decoration. Her friendship with Riku and Sora is very telling; she's the one who wakes Sora up, and together with Riku, she helps keep everything organized and focused for their little mission to another world. Though that dream is quickly stolen, her personality remains; she takes several cues from Disney princesses in her characterization.

Kairi is bright and cheerful as one would expect. Most everyone Sora grew up with is. As the daughter of the mayor, she could easily be snobbish, but instead she gets right down to business. She makes friends easily, and she doesn't seem to care about the differences between girls and boys; her best friends are both dudes and she plays with them without caring. Though it's not shown, she probably learned a bit about sword-fighting from them. She's confident in many things-- her friends, the future-- and it gives her a self-assuredness that some people lack.

In all her appearances, Kairi is encouraging and affectionate but not passive. She is adventurous, and she readily supports Riku's idea to go off into the unknown. She can also handle sarcasm and she can tease right back. She has the capability to be a little pushy, but never without good reason. It's just because the boys need a little push every once in a while.

Kairi can be patient, but she has zero tolerance for people who are mean or slippery. When Axel comes to kidnap her, she doesn't fall for it, instead looking for a way out. Weaponless and defenseless, she tumbles through a dark portal headfirst instead of going with him, deciding to take destiny into her own hands. She's fearless at times, and certainly headstrong; though she has friends who would do anything to save her, she's well aware of the risks and she'll put everything on the line to get back to them.

Kairi is a thoughtful, gentle soul beneath all her fire. She's ready to believe in others even when they've made huge mistakes. This makes her seem like she trusts too easily, and maybe that's true, but everyone needs someone to believe in them. She understands that Riku did what he did because he was scared and lonely, and she doesn't hold him accountable for it.

Kairi's willing to give her friends a nudge in the right direction once in a while, but she never asks too much; she has high standards set for herself, and she's determined to reach them. She doesn't get angry easily even when she's disappointed or momentarily defeated. Her optimism makes her a force to be reckoned with. She's very much like Sora in this respect.

Hilariously, she's a bit oblivious when it comes to love, too. She didn't seem to understand until later that Sora and Riku were vying for her affections as kids. She saw herself as one of the boys, not a prize to be won. In the second game, her true feelings after nearly losing Sora (again) are shown; she's quick to hold him and make sure he's real. She obviously loves Riku, too, but she doesn't hug him like Sora, instead opting to grab his arm or hold his hand, respecting his personal space.

Love isn't what drives her, though. There's no trace of real romantic aspirations with Kairi. She wants to find her own answers about the Keyblade War-- about her role in this conflict. As a Princess of Heart, her very existence is something she can't ignore. Though it might be difficult for her to go back to living a normal life after taking a vacation in Sora's heart, she has no problems adjusting, really. She's a problem solver through and through. Of course, friendship is another story; even as a non-combatant she finds a way to help where she can. And when she's given a weapon, she has absolutely no problem jumping in and hacking away at Heartless like she was born to do it. Kairi fights her own battles as much as she cheers from the sidelines and she won't break a sweat while doing it.

Watching Sora grow and change during his first journey certainly affected her. Like him, she has this unshakable belief that things can and will get better. She has no problems accepting Naminé as part of herself, though they are different people at the same time. One could say the two are in harmony, unlike Sora and Roxas, who end up beating the snot out of each other in Sora's heart. There's also the fact that Sora occasionally turned into a Heartless and ravaged things. What a mess.

But for things to get better, someone has to go out there and fight. Kairi isn't clingy or demanding about this. She's actually quite reasonable. Rather than keep Sora and Riku home after the tragic comedy that was Kingdom Hearts II, she encourages them to leave. The Mark of Mastery is an incredible opportunity, after all, and they get to train underneath a wizard. How exciting.

Maybe too exciting, though. On one hand, she could never tell her friends not to leave when they have a universe to save and a job to do. On the other, she fears losing either of them. Sora and Riku are a part of her as much as her own heart. She worries for their safety. She worries that Riku might take too much on himself and forget to be a person once in a while. Finally, despite her role in her friends' lives, she likely fears being a burden in the unavoidable clash of light and darkness.

Still, Kairi isn't the kind of person to sit idly by. She takes her destiny into her own hands rather than waiting for someone to rescue her, fighting when she's able and guiding others when she can't. Though she might not be of royal blood, she has the makings of any other Disney heroine, and she's an important fixture in the lives of her friends.

AU Deviation:

Kairi has freedom to fight for herself in BNW, so the more adventurous aspects of her personality will be visible. Unfortunately, there are some downsides to her troubled upbringing. She's learned to deal with lying by omission. It's not something she's proud of, but it's the only way she knows how to blend in with Union natives. Her guilt makes her just a little more closed off than in canon; while she's still ready to make friends of all shapes and sizes, she's very tight-lipped about her home and it clearly bothers her.

Additionally, losing everything including her twin sister has made her very lonely and incomplete. She doesn't dwell on this often, but it's always there and it sometimes aches. She desperately believes she'll see everyone again, almost to the point of denying everything else.

Having been in more than one shipwreck, it isn't inconceivable that she would be downright terrified of sailing in rough weather.

Canon Abilities:

First off, Kairi is a Princess of Heart, which carries a lot of heavy connotations. There's no darkness in her heart whatsoever, which allows her to go through corridors of darkness without risk of losing her heart. Also, if she does lose her heart, her body remains in a comatose state without creating a Heartless or anything.

Though Kairi is only seen using one power-- the ability to turn Sora back from a Heartless-- other Princesses of Heart are shown. They can create barriers against the darkness, sense the darkness itself and in others, and possibly give others a little magic boost. This last bit makes sense when Kairi's lucky charm is taken into consideration; she gives it to Sora so that not only will he promise to come home, but to keep him safe.

She wears a little necklace that supposedly has a spell on it (thanks Aqua), and it protected her and sent her to Destiny Islands when her home was destroyed.

It's only late into the second game that we see her fight. Because she touched Aqua's keyblade, she inherited one of her own. She knows the melee basics, but has only just begun training under Yen Sid when Dream Drop Distance ends.

Enlightened Abilities:

Kairi doesn't have a lot of canon abilities, but since "Light" isn't really an element, Fairy/Psychic is going to be the best bet. I'll be choosing Child of the Verdant Forest for her trainer ability, and I'd like her to just have an ordinary short sword as a replacement for her Keyblade in canon.

FIRST STAGE: (Her current.)
- Low Empathy: Kairi can sense the intentions of Pokemon and people alike if she concentrates. Obviously, Pokemon are easier (as this lines up with her innate trainer ability). I will make a permissions post for this.
- Shield: Kairi can make a small shield to nullify damage. It only lasts for about fifteen seconds, and it's only big enough for one person (or Pokemon).
- Mending: With immense force of will, Kairi can lend her own life energy in order to heal cuts, scrapes, and small wounds.
- Pearl: Kairi can summon a burst of light to harm enemies, much like Dazzling Gleam.

SECOND STAGE:
- True Empathy: Kairi can sense the emotions and intentions of others as if they were her own.
- Barrier: Kairi can now shield a handful of people or Pokemon at once, though not for longer than fifteen seconds. On a smaller scale, she can also use shields offensively to reflect damage back at her attackers.
- Healing: Kairi is able to lend her life energy to healing medium injuries and broken bones. Abusing this power will cause her to black out, though.
- Holy: Kairi summons a column of light down on her enemies, sending a shockwave outward that annihilates weakened enemies and pushes others back.

THIRD STAGE:
- Projection: In addition to sensing emotions and intentions, she can project positive emotions to others around her, bolstering and inspiring them.
- Immunity: Kairi's shield is able to last half a minute, as well as clearing and preventing status effects for the duration.
- Resurrection: Kairi can bring people back from the brink of death, reversing traumatic injuries and reattaching limbs if necessary. Obviously, this cannot be used lightly, and it will make her very weak afterward. She can't actually rez the dead though.
- Faith: Kairi summons a ring of light-pillars that expand outward for several yards.

Starter Pokémon: A Cleffa, lovingly named Minnie.

Notes/Special Considerations:

As mentioned before, I spoke to the mods about having Kairi come from a place yet undiscovered. The thread is here.

SAMPLES

First-Person: here's a thread!

Third-Person:

-What would you say the role of Pokémon is in your life?
They're my partners and friends! Without them, my life would be a lot less interesting. I'm really glad I met them.

-What do you feel your role in Union is?
My role? Hmm... If I were a little older, I think I'd breed Pokémon. But, since I can fight, I'm going to see as much of the world as I can.

-What do you seek for humanity’s future?
I want to see harmony between us and Pokémon. Not just trainers. Everyone. No one should have to live scared to go outside, you know? There's so much we're missing by hiding behind the walls.

-To what lengths would you go to rescue your allies if they were lost in the wilderness?
I'd go after them, even if it was dangerous. They'd do the same for me, after all.

-What would you say the most important occupation is within Union?
That's kind of unfair, don't you think? Everyone keeps the city going in their own way.

-What does the story of the Savior mean to you?
It takes a lot of courage to do what the Savior did. Though, I wonder how much of the story's changed. Why don't we ever hear about her Pokémon friends? Aren't they just as important?
